Food truck wrapping & custom illuminated signs

Originally a vintage 1980s American fire truck, Home Dogs was fully restored and transformed into a show-stopping food truck for festivals and events. We’re grateful to have been part of its journey, wrapping the entire truck to celebrate its unique history and crafting custom illuminated signage for standout visibility on the road and at events.

Our Contributions

We fully wrapped the entire Home Dogs truck and built a retractable sign on the hatch with the Home Dogs name, designed to fold flat against the vehicle while in transit and extend outward when in use. Additionally, we installed a large, illuminated hot dog sign on the roof with a mechanism to keep it flat during travel and stand upright when needed.

The Process

Full wrap

Our work on the Home Dogs food truck began with refining the client’s design, adding finishing touches to fit the truck’s unique proportions. Since the specific color required was unavailable in standard vinyl, we opted for custom-printed cast vinyl with a matte lamination, giving the truck a distinctive look that stands out among food trucks. The wrapping process presented some challenges, as the truck’s extruded sections and less-than-perfect paint required careful surface preparation for optimal adhesion. The most demanding part was the front section, with its sharp bends and angles, but everything ultimately came together seamlessly.

Hatch sign

The hatch sign, though small, presented its own set of challenges. We began by building a custom aluminium frame to fit the exact size needed for the sign, then attached an aluminium face. The face was wrapped in the same colour vinyl as the rest of the truck for a seamless look, with the logo applied in black cut vinyl for a bold contrast.
One of the key requirements was to make the sign retractable when not in use, especially when the hatch was closed. To achieve this, we added hinges at the bottom, allowing the sign to be folded flat against the truck. To keep the sign securely in place when retracted, we also installed strong door locks on each side, preventing movement during transport. Additionally, removable aluminium bars were added to the back of the sign to ensure stability when extended, with the bars designed to withstand strong winds and keep the sign straight and secure.

Hotdog Sign

The giant hotdog sign on the roof was a unique feature of the truck and required a more robust approach. Similar to the hatch sign, we created a custom aluminium frame, but this time with stronger hinges and additional structural reinforcement to support the larger size. We also added more heavy-duty door locks and an extra chain to secure the sign when in the extended position, ensuring everything remained solid and rigid.
When attaching the sign to the roof, we took extra care to seal all the perforations with silicone, preventing any leaks inside the truck. To make the hotdog sign stand out at night, we installed an external LED illumination bar at the bottom. This LED bar was specifically designed for this type of signage, providing bright and even lighting that made the sign visible and eye-catching even in low light conditions. The end result was a striking, functional piece of signage that truly completed the look of the food truck.
